Description

The scene early in the novel is related by the witness, a Mr. Lockwood, who is disturbed from a half sleeping state by a knocking at his bedroom window while staying the night at Wuthering Heights.
The scene is interesting for its depiction, many years after the death of the adult Catherine, of the ghost that appears at the window as being a child. When Lockwood questions her as to her identity she replies that she is ‘Catherine Linton’, so there can be no doubt as to who the apparition is.

‘The intense horror of nightmare came over me: I tried to draw back my arm, but the hand clung to it, and a most melancholy voice sobbed, “Let me in—let me in!’”
